What is a watchman??

Some may look at the title of this blog site and wonder, "What is a watchman?" That's an excellent question, I'm glad you asked. Let's look at a few definitions:

S: (n) watchman, watcher, security guard (a guard who keeps watch)
wordnet.web.princeton.edu

watchman
1. a person who keeps guard over a building at night, to protect it from fire, vandals, or thieves.
2.(formerly) a person who guards or patrols the streets at night.

I'd say those definitions make it clear that a watchman is someone who keeps watch, keeps guard over something, perhaps a building, a city. When a watchman sees danger coming it's his responsibility to let the people know. It's not necessarily his job to stop the danger, or to fight the danger, but to let the people know about imminent danger.

1Again the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
2Son of man, speak to the children of thy people, and say unto them, When I bring the sword upon a land, if the people of the land take a man of their coasts, and set him for their watchman:
3If when he seeth the sword come upon the land, he blow the trumpet, and warn the people;
4Then whosoever heareth the sound of the trumpet, and taketh not warning; if the sword come, and take him away, his blood shall be upon his own head.
5He heard the sound of the trumpet, and took not warning; his blood shall be upon him. But he that taketh warning shall deliver his soul.
6But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman's hand.

Ezekiel 33:1-6

Over the past year or so I haven't been able to escape these words. It seemed like every time I turned on the radio or TV there was a sermon about Ezekiel 33. It wasn't just any old sermon, they were those sermons where you feel like the preacher is speaking directly to you.

Now let me clarify, by no means am I proclaiming myself to be a prophet, please don't misunderstand that. What I am saying, as a disciple of Jesus Christ, and a student of God's word, is that there are many people in this nation in imminent danger, this nation itself is in imminent danger, this world is in imminent danger!

You may ask yourself "What kind of danger could I possibly be in?" Well if Jesus Christ is not your Lord and Saviour you fall into the category of being in imminent danger. Sin has infected this world worse than cancer, AIDS, or any other disease. The only cure is Jesus Christ!
In this blog my intent is to blow the trumpet and do my best to point folks to the cure, Jesus, because Lord knows I don't want any blood on my hands. I pray that this blog will convict you, offend you, and encourage you to blow the trumpet yourself. Most importantly, I pray that you will be transformed by the renewing of your minds and that you'll be washed and regenerated by the Holy Spirit. May the Lord bless you & keep you!
